When considering getting a new pet your options are limitless. In one pet group alone, lets say dogs, the number of breeds with their own individual characteristics and personality traits is endless. However finding a pet that suits you, as far as your family situation and living conditions is a whole different story.

Do you have the time and resources to walk a dog, clean a cats litter box or maybe even train a horse? Or do you live in an apartment or condo where your pet options are much more limited? If this is the case you may want to learn about the different pet turtle types.

There are four basic types of turtles: Turtles, terrapins, tortoises and sea turtles. These are all turtles, but with their own unique lifestyles and mannerisms.

Turtles

Lets start with the turtle. Two prime examples of turtles are the red eared slider and painted turtles. These are considered turtles because they’re amphibious, meaning they live partially on land and in water.

Tortoises

This is far different from the terrestrial, or land dwelling tortoise. A box turtle is a good example of a tortoise. If you thought turtles and tortoises were one in the same you need to read on.

If you put a box turtle in a painted turtles amphibious habitat with a swimming area, your little tortoise could drown! Tortoises have been known to wade in shallow waters, but can get fatigued and drown if they can’t easily escape deep waters.

Terrapins

The terrapin is actually what a pet turtle/tortoise is referred to in the UK. If you ever visit England and start bragging about your pet turtle be prepared for some funny looks.

When people in the UK discuss turtles they’re referring to sea turtles, which can grow to a whopping 2 meters and are certainly not considered pets. Therefore, pet turtles are dubbed terrapins.

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles inhabit every ocean in the world except for the arctic ocean. It is far too cold to support a sea turtle. As beautiful and majestic as they are, most sea turtles are not considered pets.

However there are fully aquatic turtles that you can keep in their fish tanks. To avoid confusion these are simply labeled “aquatic” turtles in pet stores.

Pet turtles have a high fatality rate due to ignorance of how to care for turtles. Turtles are often viewed as something like a pet rock. This no maintenance neglectful attitude will cause illness and unnecessary death.

Regardless of what type of turtle you choose, make sure you educate yourself on the matter. That leaves less room for error and your pet turtle will thank you for it.

Whether you’re interested in a turtle, tortoise, terrapin or sea turtle you can be a satisfied turtle owner in a very short time. There is a bit to learn due to the fact that people underestimate turtles as a no brain-er pet. It definitely can be easy with just a little know how and routine maintenance you would give any other pet. These types of turtles all have their own unique needs and care, so adjust accordingly.

Obtain important recommendations in the sphere of house training dogs – please make sure to study this web site. The time has come when proper information is truly within one click, use this possibility.

Northern Cyprus is arguably one of the best places in the world to watch sea turtles. People come from far and near just to catch a glimpse of these spectacular reptiles nesting and hatching on the beaches on Cyprus.

From later May to early August, you can join the Marine Turtle Conservation Project (MTCP) volunteers at the Alagadi Beach at nights to watch the female green & loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. There’s nothing like sitting next to a metre long sea turtle as she lays her eggs, covers her next and slowly moves back into the sea. It really is once in a life time experience not to be missed.

From the end of July to early September, you can head to the Alagadi or Karayaka beach to see baby turtles hatch from their nests and head into the sea (with a little help from MTCP volunteers). Watching the baby turtles scramble from their nest and down to the sea is a sight not to be missed if you’re on North Cyprus Holidays.

North Cyprus offers a remarkable turtle watching experience and we are recommended as a must do ecotourism activity when visiting Cyprus over the summer. We often support the MTCP volunteers through charity events and have family friends who volunteer on the project who are always happy for our guests to join them in volunteering activities (though be prepared for an early start). We can’t say enough how amazing turtle watching is here, so please come see for yourselves!

The awesome sight of watching sea turtles as they hatch on shores of Northern Cyprus beaches has brought people from far and near, especially those looking for Ecotourism. Sea turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. The female turtles come around May and dig deep pits about 40 cm into the ground into which they lay their eggs and then they carefully cover them with tonnes of sand. They Then swim away and leave the eggs safe and cool in their ‘sandy’ nest. The concept of the sand is to trap some air around the eggs and this is important for their development. Female green turtles sometimes make several nests in one season with each containing a batch of eggs laid biweekly.
10 Turtle Watching Tips

 1. Minimize the use of lights, such as torches, flash lights, etc. If you must use lights, try putting cellophane over it or some coloured cloth
2. Don’t light open fires such as campfires, at the beach
3. Lights shouldn’t be any more than a 3-volt, 2-cell, hand-held torch light
4. Don’t point lights directly at the turtles when they’re leaving the water, approaching the beach, building nests or laying eggs
5. Don’t get too close to the turtles as they leave the water and head towards the beach
6. PLEASE keep all dogs far away!
7. Don’t touch the turtles, the hatchlings or their eggs
8. Avoid loud noises and sudden movements around the turtles while they lay their eggs
9. Report sick, injured, stranded or dead turtles appropriately
10. Try to learn the habits and needs of turtles in order to increase your appreciation of them

After thinking that you want to have a pet in the house you decided that this pet is going to be a turtle. That is not the point when the desicion making is going to stop. Now you will need to think about the type of turtle you want to have. This article will provide some tips regarding the things you will need to take into consideration when deciding what type of turtle you want to bring to your house and care for it.

To own a turtle requires a commitment as much as owning a dog or cat does and this fact has to be well understood before going any further. There might not be as much effort involved in taking care of a turtle pet but you will have to feed it and clean its living space. You will need to teach all children around your house how a turtle should be treated. A turtle will need your attention once or twice a day in order to have a good life so make sure you have the time and resources before making the trip to the pet store.

Many types of turtles exist so you should be able to find the rigt one. There are bigger turtles and there are smaller turtles, a big turtle will need its own outdoor living space while a smaller turtle can be kept in an indoor compartment with ease. The box turtle is one such turtle that can be kept indoors, a small turtle tank will provide a good enough living space for it. Another factor that you should take into consideration, if there are kids in the house, is that some turtles are suited for such an envoirment while others are not.

Before you go buy your turtle you should read as much as you can about turtles. This way you can make an informed decision by knowing enough about all the different types of turtles. You can find information in turtle books from the library or you can read online web sites as there are many sources to find good information. By doing all this reading you will get the required information that will help you choose the right turtle and you will be able to provide the right life quality as well.

Having a turtle pet is as much a commitment as with any other pet but it will be a rewarding experience that you will enjoy. Once you made the decision about the commitment you can purchase your turtle. When you choose yours it is important to know the facts, they will help you choose the best pet for you and your family. Not only that, by knowing why you chose your pet, you will know the necessities it will have so you will be able to provide the best possible life it can have.

Good luck with your future turtle care endeavors, I really hope this article has helped you towards choosing your turtle. Not that good luck is a requirement, but it is always good to have it around the house.

Sea turtles have long been dying out or threatened and there are only seven kinds of sea turtles left in the world, because of hunting and pollution. However the population of sea turtles just jumped at San Diego‘s SeaWorld.

Approximately 82 eggs hatched in October. Before this the last successful hatching took place at SeaWorld in 2003 but there were only 21 sea turtles. Park staff had incubated the eggs to try and increase the chances of hatching and after 21, staff felt they were successful.

Well this time around the Park Staff opted not to incubate them and let nature do its thing. The baby sea turtles hatched on Shipwreck Beach without any assistance from park staff. The turtles hatched on October 5 from ping pong sized eggs. Ever since, the babies have been gradually developing and will be on display at the park before the end of the year.

Because so many eggs hatched this year at SeaWorld the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will settle on whether the new turtles stay at SeaWorld and if the turtles will be allowed to mate again next year. There are already 30 adult sea turtles at the park including three green females and one male. These adults range in age between 40 and 50 but they usually live to be over 100 years.

These turtles are in their prime for reproduction which means the park doesn’t know if these baby turtles are from the same mother or many. All three females had hidden eggs in the sand on the beach. Consequently in order to determine who the mother is, the baby sea turtles will be undergoing genetic testing. Staff will also be digging up Shipwreck Beach in order to see how many eggs failed to hatch.

Little is known about sea turtles but experts know they mate in the water, then go up onto the sand. While on the sand the female will dig three different holes in order to fool predators but they end up laying their eggs in only one hole.

The nest in the sand generally holds between 100 and 120 eggs. Then the eggs develop in the sand for three months. Depending on how warm or cold the sand is will determine the sex of each baby. The babies when they hatch only weigh a few grams but can reach 250 pounds by the age of 20. The babies diet consists of squid, krill, shrimp, and special pellets provided by SeaWorld staff.

Although there are only seven species of sea turtles and they are all in danger of extinction or threatened; these babies will help make a rebound. Since humans are the major problem for this species it will take a lot for them to be removed from the endangered list but sea turtles are gradually making their way back.
